Cruises from Miami, minus the traffic panic.

PortMiami changed how you arrive for the 2026 to 2027 season. Your arrival time decides when you show up, and your terminal decides which way you drive in. Here's how to get it right, from an advisor who has sat in that traffic.

what I saw on embarkation day

Walking the bridge with luggage.

On our first Virgin Voyages sailing out of Miami, the traffic into the port was so bad that people gave up on their rideshares, got out, and walked over the bridge dragging their suitcases.

Inside the terminal was the other half of the problem. People who had shown up hours early to beat the traffic were sitting around, waiting to board.

Both groups were reacting to the same reputation, and both had a worse morning for it. The new PortMiami plan is aimed at exactly this, and it comes down to two rules.

the two rules for 2026 and 2027

Your time, then your terminal.

rule one

Arrive at your scheduled time.

Miami-Dade County announced the plan on October 16, 2026: arrive only at the embarkation time you picked during online check-in. Early is not the cautious choice here. Early arrivals are part of the line you're trying to avoid. The port expects 81 days this season with 7 to 10 ships in at once, and it's adding AI traffic cameras and police on Biscayne Boulevard on select dates.

rule two

Your terminal picks the entrance.

Terminals AA, A, B, C and D come in through the PortMiami Tunnel. Terminals E, F, G, J and V come in over the PortMiami Bridge. Go the wrong way and you're looping the port in the same traffic everyone else is in. Rideshares are the exception: they all use the tunnel.

TerminalWho sails from itEntranceLong-term parking
AA MSC Cruises Tunnel Garage AA, $35/day
A Royal Caribbean Tunnel Garage A, rate posted online
B Norwegian Cruise Line Tunnel Garage B, $35/day
C Several lines, varies by ship Tunnel Garage C, $28/day
D Carnival Tunnel Garage D and Lot D, $28/day
E Carnival Bridge Lot E, $28/day
F Carnival Bridge Garage G, $28/day
G Royal Caribbean Group, new terminal opening late 2027 Bridge Garage G, $28/day
J Smaller luxury ships Bridge Garages J and K
V Virgin Voyages Bridge Garage G, $28/day

Terminal G is a $345 million Royal Caribbean Group terminal under construction, slated to open in late 2027. Until then, Royal Caribbean's own directions page lists Terminals A, AA and E.

getting there and parking

Getting to PortMiami from New Jersey.

From New Jersey, that usually starts with a flight out of Newark. PortMiami's address is 1015 North America Way, Miami, FL 33132, but put your terminal in the GPS, not the port.

Flying in to Miami (MIA)

Miami International is about 7 miles from the port, per PortMiami. Fly in the day before. From New Jersey that means a Newark or LaGuardia flight the afternoon before, a hotel night, and a calm morning. Fort Lauderdale works too, but it's about 26 miles out, so budget the drive.

Rideshare and taxis

Uber, Lyft and passenger buses are routed through the tunnel to their staging areas, even if your terminal is on the bridge side. Taxis going to the staging area across from Terminal C use the tunnel and Lot 1; taxis for Terminal E use the bridge and Lot 2. Have your terminal letter ready before you get in the car.

Parking at the port

PortMiami lists long-term parking at $28 a day for Garages C, D, F and G and Lot E, and $35 a day for Garages AA and B. Garage A's rate is posted online. Debit cards are not accepted, so bring a credit card or cash. Rates as of October 2026; check before you go.

Walking in, or the free trolley

You can walk across the north side of the PortMiami Bridge, and the free Coral Way Trolley stops at the port. Fine for a light bag and a cool morning. With full luggage, Miami heat, or anyone who moves slowly, it's not the move.

Airport shuttles

The free PortMiami shuttle runs between terminals only, for sailings that leave from one terminal and come back to another. It is not an airport shuttle. Carnival (Carnival Celebration) and Royal Caribbean (Icon of the Seas) have offered airport transfers on select dates. Get the dates and pickup point in writing from the line, or from me.

Hotel the night before

Downtown, Brickell and the airport area all work. I'll match the hotel to your terminal, not just your budget.

embarkation morning

What I tell every Miami client.

  • Find your terminal letter in your cruise documents and match it to the tunnel or the bridge. Save it in your phone notes and send it to whoever is driving.
  • Pick an arrival time during online check-in and leave the hotel for that time, not two hours before it. The port's own plan asks every guest to arrive only at their scheduled time.
  • Check traffic that morning. On select busy dates, police direct traffic on Biscayne Boulevard, and a crash on one approach can back up the other.
  • Keep passports, medications, chargers and anything you can't lose in your carry-on. If you end up walking the last stretch, that's the bag you'll be carrying.
  • If you're flying in, fly in the day before. Never same day. One delayed flight and you're watching the ship leave from the airport.

Sailing on marathon Sunday?

The Life Time Miami Marathon runs Sunday, January 31, 2027, starting at 6 a.m. In 2023 the port stayed open with access through NE 5th Street, but the 2027 road closures aren't posted yet. If you sail that day, I'll send you the route once they are.

frequently asked

PortMiami, answered.

Which PortMiami entrance do I use for my terminal?

Terminals AA, A, B, C and D use the PortMiami Tunnel. Terminals E, F, G, J and V use the PortMiami Bridge. Your terminal letter is in your cruise documents. Terminal assignments can change by ship, so check it again the week you sail.

Should I arrive early to beat Miami cruise traffic?

No. Arrive at the time you picked during online check-in. Miami-Dade County asks every cruise guest to arrive only at their scheduled time, because early arrivals add to the lines on the road and in the terminal. Arriving early usually means sitting in the terminal for hours.

Which terminal does each cruise line use at PortMiami?

Per PortMiami: MSC uses Terminal AA, Royal Caribbean Terminal A, Norwegian Terminal B, Carnival Terminals D, E and F, and Virgin Voyages Terminal V. Terminal C serves several lines, and Terminal J serves smaller luxury ships. Royal Caribbean Group's new Terminal G is slated to open in late 2027. Always confirm with your booking, because assignments change by ship.

How do Uber and Lyft get into PortMiami?

Rideshare companies and passenger buses are routed through the PortMiami Tunnel to their staging areas, even if your terminal is on the bridge side. Taxis to the staging area across from Terminal C use the tunnel and Lot 1, and taxis for Terminal E use the bridge and Lot 2.

How much is parking at PortMiami?

As of October 2026, PortMiami lists long-term parking at $28 per day in Garages C, D, F and G and Lot E, and $35 per day in Garages AA and B. Garage A posts its rate online. Debit cards are not accepted. Rates change, so check the port before you go.

Is there a free shuttle from Miami airport to the cruise port?

Not from the port itself. The free PortMiami shuttle runs only between terminals, for sailings that depart from one terminal and return to another. Carnival and Royal Caribbean have offered airport transfers for specific ships on select dates, so ask your cruise line or advisor and get the details in writing.

How far is Miami International Airport from PortMiami?

About 7.1 miles, per PortMiami. Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International is about 25.7 miles away. Either way, fly in the day before your cruise.

Can I walk to PortMiami?

Yes. PortMiami says you can walk across the north side of the PortMiami Bridge, and the free Coral Way Trolley stops at the port. With full luggage, Miami heat or limited mobility, take a car to the terminal instead.

Is PortMiami open during the Miami Marathon?

The 2027 Life Time Miami Marathon is Sunday, January 31, 2027, starting at 6 a.m. In 2023 the port stayed open with access through NE 5th Street, but the 2027 road closures have not been posted yet. If you sail that day, plan extra time and check the race advisory that week.

Why book a Miami cruise with a travel advisor?

You pay the same fare as booking direct, and you get someone who checks your terminal, entrance, arrival time, flight and hotel as one plan, and who picks up the phone if any of it changes.
