Adults‑only all‑inclusive resorts, picked for two.
“Adults-only” is a label, not a promise. Some resorts are couples-only, some are 16 and up, and a few just have an adults section. Here’s how I tell them apart, and the resorts I’d start with in six destinations.
How to choose: the distinctions that matter.
Most couples start with photos. I start with five questions, because two resorts with the same “adults-only” sign can give you two very different weeks.
1. Adults-only, couples-only, or an adults area?
A true adults-only resort keeps kids off the property. An “adults area” or adults pool at a family resort does not, and you will still share the restaurants, the lobby and the beach. Then there is couples-only: Sandals says its resorts are adults-only and designed for couples, and Beloved Playa Mujeres calls itself adults-only and couples-only. Perfect for a honeymoon. Worth checking first if you are planning a friends trip.
2. Check the minimum age, brand by brand.
Most brands draw the line at 18: Sandals, Excellence, Royalton, Le Blanc and Hyatt Zilara all say so. The exceptions are where people get surprised. ATELIER Playa Mujeres admits guests from 16. And Zoëtry says its resorts are adult-oriented, but children are permitted, so “adult-oriented” is not the same as adults-only. Brand names can mislead too: Iberostar’s adults-only hotels sit across more than one of its lines, and JOIA by Iberostar is not adults-only as a whole, so check the individual hotel.
3. Quiet or social? Pick the vibe on purpose.
Several brands run a calm line and a lively line. Hyatt’s Secrets is the romantic one, while Breathless describes a lively atmosphere and a vibrant social scene. Royalton splits the same way: Hideaway focuses on relaxation and privacy, and CHIC delivers vibrant social energy. On our own stay at Secrets Riviera Cancun, Breathless Riviera Cancun sat right next door, so we spent the days at the quiet pools and walked over for the DJ when we wanted it. That kind of pairing solves the “I want to relax, you want to party” problem.
4. Decide on club level before you compare prices.
Club levels change the trip more than most room upgrades. Secrets calls it Preferred Club, Breathless calls it Xhale Club, Royalton calls it Diamond Club, and Sandals sells Club Level and Butler rooms. Excellence Club adds a private lounge, pool, beach and restaurant, and you get it by booking an Excellence Club suite. When we stayed in Preferred Club, the club restaurant became our go-to for breakfast and dinner.
5. Know what varies, even when it says all-inclusive.
- Gratuities. Sandals includes all tips and says tipping is not allowed. Secrets and Breathless list all taxes and gratuities as included. Le Blanc includes gratuities and leaves extra tips up to you.
- Airport transfers. Sandals includes roundtrip transfers. Secrets says guests cover transportation to and from the resort, and at other brands it depends on how and how long you book. It matters on a comparison, so we price it into your quote either way.
- Dinner reservations. Secrets and Breathless advertise no reservations required. Excellence says most restaurants don’t need one, but teppanyaki does. At Le Blanc Los Cabos, every restaurant requires a reservation.
- Premium drinks. Sandals lists top-shelf spirits, Secrets lists top-shelf drinks, and Excellence and Le Blanc list premium drinks. Club levels usually go a step further.
- Wi-Fi. Included on the inclusion lists at Sandals, Secrets, Hyatt Zilara, Excellence and Le Blanc.

The widest choice of adults-only resorts in one place, from lively to very quiet. If you want the quieter end, look north to Playa Mujeres too.

Hyatt says its Montego Bay resorts, including Secrets St. James, Secrets Wild Orchid, Breathless Montego Bay and Hyatt Zilara Rose Hall, expect to resume normal operations in the first quarter of 2027. Sandals reopened five of its eight Jamaica resorts; Sandals South Coast reopens November 18, 2026, and Sandals Montego Bay and Sandals Caribbean Cay (formerly Sandals Royal Caribbean) reopen December 18, 2026. JOIA Rose Hall by Iberostar is closed for refurbishment through November 30, 2026. Dates can move, so we recheck before you pay.
How to read the ratings
Not every resort is scored on every platform, and ratings can change. Treat them as a directional signal, not a verdict. A 96 that is too quiet for you is the wrong resort. Comparing on budget too? What is the minimum age at an adults-only all-inclusive resort?
Usually 18. Sandals, Excellence, Royalton, Le Blanc and Hyatt Zilara all say 18 and over, and Secrets resort FAQs say the same. There are exceptions: ATELIER Playa Mujeres admits guests from 16, and Zoëtry describes its resorts as adult-oriented but permits children. Check the policy for your exact resort before you book.
Can a group of friends book a couples-only resort?
Read the label. Sandals says its resorts are adults-only and designed for couples, and Beloved Playa Mujeres calls itself couples-only. For a friends trip, start with brands that describe themselves as adults-only rather than couples-only, such as Secrets, Excellence, Royalton or Hyatt Zilara, and we will confirm the policy for your group.
Are tips included at adults-only all-inclusive resorts?
At several brands, yes. Sandals includes all tips and says tipping is not allowed. Secrets, Breathless and Hyatt Zilara list taxes and gratuities as included. Le Blanc includes gratuities and leaves extra tips up to you. Policies differ elsewhere, so we confirm it for your resort.
Are airport transfers included?
Sometimes. Sandals includes roundtrip airport transfers. Secrets resorts say guests are responsible for transportation to and from the resort. At other brands it can depend on how and how long you book. We arrange the transfer with the rest of the trip so arrival day is simple.
Do we need dinner reservations at an all-inclusive?
It depends on the brand. Secrets and Breathless advertise no reservations required, though some experiences can need one. Beloved says you do not need dining reservations. Excellence says most restaurants do not require them, but some do. At Le Blanc Los Cabos, every restaurant requires a reservation.
Is the club level worth it at an adults-only resort?
Often, for couples who want the quieter corners. At Secrets Riviera Cancun we booked Preferred Club, and its restaurant became our go-to for breakfast and dinner. Excellence Club suites add a private lounge, pool, beach and restaurant. We price both room levels so you can see the difference.
Are Jamaica’s adults-only resorts open?
Many are, but not all. As of September 29, 2026, Hyatt says its Montego Bay resorts expect to reopen in the first quarter of 2027. Sandals Montego Bay and Sandals Caribbean Cay reopen December 18, 2026, and Sandals South Coast reopens November 18, 2026. We check your resort’s status before you pay.
